What is Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome?
Beckwith-Wiedemann
Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder. It is an overgrowth disorder that
affects approximately 1;15,000 children. Most of the time, the disorder
happens spontaneously. Characteristics are: Large Birth Weight,
Neonatal Hypoglycemia, Enlarged Tongue, Hemihypertrophy, Ear pits and
creases, and red "stork bite" birth mark on the forehead. It also
causes the baby to be born with his/her intestines outside of the
stomach in a membrane covered sac. BWS children go through a lot of
different tests and screenings. One of the most common screening is the
cancer screening. Children with BWS need to get blood work every 6
weeks and abdominal ultrasounds every 3 months, to check for Wilms
Tumors and other Cancers. These screenings are done until the age of 8.
